(Ages 5yrs and over) A fantastic program for after school and a great way for children to explore acrobatics, combined with jazz dancing. This is a fun way to develop core body strength, learn how to maintain discipline, and work in a supportive group atmosphere. At Glittery Tapping Wonderland regardless of age or experience level, there are classes available throughout Melbourne.
Starting with Jazz we get the class warmed up and then move onto acrobatics, working with mats and hoops. Starting with learning tumbles, cartwheels, handstands and advance onto more difficult moves like lifts and flips as the age and abilities progress.
Acro dance has been known by other names like acrobatic dance and gymnastic dance. Acro started to emerge in early 1900s in US and Canada through performing acts at Vaudeville. It wasnt until 1991 when the first acro dance competition was held at Vaudeville, which saw it starting to expand internationally. What also helped is seeing acro performed in Cirque du Soleii and other contemporary circus’s around the world as many marveled. TV programs like “So you think you can dance” have also added to the growth of this art form. As it continues to grow and gain popularity it is now commonly recognized as acro dance. Combining dance technique with precise acrobatics, it has unique choreography blended seamlessly with music.
Acro can be challenging at first for dancers as it involves classical dance elements combined with complex acrobatic skills. Usually built off Jazz and Ballet, acro is different to gymnastics where technique and movement is carefully connected to the next. Acrobtic movements like cartwheels, elbow stands and head stands just to name a few are normal when performing. It can also be commonplace where tricks with partners are performed.
Give your child something fun to do after school. We offer classes at our dance schools around Melbourne. A class usually consists of warm up, stretching, conditioning and gradually move into dance moves combined with acrobatic movements. A dance must have a significant percentage of dance movement with respect to its acrobatic content for it to be categorized as acro dance. Our qualified teachers take the guess work out of acro by providing step by step instructions for every level. We start at the beginning ensuring you know about proper placement and technique so the correct building blocks are there to progress safely and quickly from one level to the next.
There are many benefits for your children to be involved. This can range from physical development due to the range of motion when performing various movements.
As you can see Acro can be a demanding but extremely rewarding dance to learn. Dancers must be in excellent physical condition. Below are the different acrobatic exercises generally used at Glittery Tapping Wonderland.
A fast paced, fun class, combining styles of Hip Hop and Jazz. We combine these styles together so that technique is taught with the Jazz element in the class and once warmed up move onto tumbling, cartwheels and hand stands. We start with warm ups and stretching, work on some combinations to music.
Corner to corner then move onto the acrobatic element and finish with a funky routine coordinating in some of the acrobatics. All our classes are are age appropriate, the moves are not too sexy and outrageous. Costumes for our concerts are always covered up, without midriffs and tummy’s showing. Improves flexibility, concentration, confidence and co-ordination
